Acne Treatment with Benzoyl Peroxide

Considering that practically all products used for treating acne can result side effects it is probably best to choose the one which is both effective and represents lesser risk of side effects or at least in milder form. Since use of antibiotics should be minimal and should not be taken unless it is really necessary treatment of acne with antibiotics is not appropriate for everyone. Hormonal treatment may be successful in reducing of acne even when the androgen levels in the blood are not abnormal, however, if acne is not caused by increased androgen levels hormonal treatment is probably not appropriate. Phototherapy and laser treatment are very expensive and besides that might cause permanent damage to the skin, while retinoids which can be also used for acne treatment can result toxic effects with prolonged high intake. Thus benzoyl peroxide seems the most appropriate for milder and moderate acne treatment although it can also cause side effects.

Pure benzoyl peroxide is highly flammable, toxic and a potential tumor promoter but in acne treatment it is used diluted in an ointment in concentration from 2,5% to 10%. Besides that it breaks down in contact with the skin producing benzoic acid and oxygen, while possible side effects are skin irritation, redness, itching, burning, peeling and in some people also swelling. For that reason it is not recommendable for people with very sensitive skin and who are sensitive to benzoyl peroxide. Diluted benzoyl peroxide is used in a form of a gel or cream which is applied to the affected area one to three time a day (according to the directions of the manufacturer or your physician). Its greatest advantage is that it removes the existing acne and prevents new lesions as well. Besides that benzoyl peroxide also does not generate bacterial resistance like the antibiotics. Products containing benzoyl peroxide can be bought over-the-couter without a prescription but pregnant and nursing women, and all who are taking medications should not used it before consulting with their physician.
